SCDRRRA Pinewood Derby Guidelines - Version 2.0
  1. How much work should I put into it?
    • Cars for any Ranger's category of competition should reflect the work of a boy himself or the work of a boy and an adult.
No car should be entered into competition that does not reflect to some extent the work of a boy.
The work should reflect the ability of the boy according to age.

    • Example: A straight arrow may only be able to sand and paint a car, where a trailblazer should be able to completely build the car. (Exceptions do exist)

  2. How are awards determined?
Trophy sizes will be determined by the height of the trophy column (this does not include base or headpiece). The following is a list of column heights for various levels of racing:
Section First Place Second Place Third Places
District Race 6 inches 5 inches 4 inches
Sectional Race 5 inches 4 inches 3 inches
Outpost Race 4 inches 3 inches 2 inches

    • NOTE: Trophy sizes for Best Design' and 'Fastest Car' will equal the first place trophy for that level of racing.

  3. Are there other Categories?
Categories for Fathers, Mothers, and Siblings are encouraged. Ribbons may be given in place of trophies for these events.

  4. How is "Best Design" Judged?
Judging of cars for "Best Design" will be by the following formula:
      Originality 40%
      Workmanship 30%
      General Appearance 30%

  5. How are winners determined?
Winners are to be determined by two Commanders or electronic equipment at the finish line.

  6. How many times can a car race?
All races must allow each car to race at least twice.

  7. Other Rules
All contestants must remain clear of the "show car" judging area.
